Firstly all DJ softwares are good and has nearly same features. The basic idea is to mix two or more tracks together with use of EQ knobs, faders and Tempo slider. To make this mixing better software manufacturers have different approach to enhance user experience and performance. For example, softwares have better library management, better sampling, extended Remix capability, hardware compatibility, etc.
Most used DJ softwares are Pioneer Rekordbox, Native Instrument Traktor Pro, Serato DJ, and Virtual DJ. These are some popular options about the globe. I am big fan of Virtual DJ because it was my first DJ software (like for most of people starting out) and it helped me learn a lot. Anyway, in this post we are considering Rekordbox and Traktor Pro. I will be sharing my opinion on both and why I prefer one over the other.
How Rekordbox is best
Pioneer Rekordbox DJ is a free and a mandatory software if you want to export analysed tracks to USB and play on CDJs. Or you can use rekordbox to connect with CDJs and play with all your cue points. This is the major reason many prefer Rekordbox.
When I use Traktor to create my playlists and cue points. Those files can be dragged into Rekordbox, analysed and export to USB. But downside is cue points saved in Traktor playlists will not be copied to Rekordbox. I again have to mark cue points on Rekordbox and that's extra work. (There is a third-party app to copy cue points but that's not free)
Rekordbox is much convenient because it has great library management, create playlists on Rekordbox and export to USB with all cues and tags, and CDJs work perfectly with rekordbox. Overall Rekordbox is very good and wins most battles. My recommendation for some one starting out DJing is to use Rekordbox.
But then Why I prefer to use Traktor Pro.
Firstly, I've been using Traktor software for many years and I am used to its simple layout and steady performance.
I have a Kontrol F1 controller which is used to control Remix decks on Traktor Pro. If I use Rekordbox, Kontrol F1 doesn't work with Rekordbox.
To use Rekordbox with any Midi controller, Midi option has to be enabled. To enable that option, you need to purchase a core plan which costs around 9 USD a month. So I prefer Traktor Pro, one time purchase, because it supports all Midi devices.
Early days I used to travel to play music and explore life. Having Traktor software I played with any controller eg. Hercules, Numark, Pioneer, etc. Free versions of Rekordbox or Serato doesn't give you that privilege.
Rekordbox when opens up it checks for updates, give you news, etc. No matter how many times you disable it still shows you. It takes lot of computer power to open that software.
This was my opinion and preference of both softwares. What software do you use? Do you face the same issues with your software and hardware? Comment down.
